Queen's Day in Amsterdam is going to be very special this year! Queen Beatrix has announced that she will abdicate on April 30th. On the same day our new King, Willem-Alexander, will be inaugurated. The ceremonies for the inauguration will take place at the Royal Palace at Dam Square and the Nieuwe Kerk. In the evening our new King and his wife, Queen Maximá, will take a boat tour at the IJ. So, because of the inauguration of our new King, Queen's Day is going to be even more party!
Queen's day, Queensday or Koninginnedag (as we call it), is a national holiday in the Netherlands. On this day we celebrate the birthday of the Queen of the Netherlands. It's also a typical occasion for the world-famous Orange Craze. The colour orange is a ubiquitous sight, referring to the name of our royal family, the House of Orange. Everywhere in the city you'll see orange banners, orange coloered foods and drinks and... people dressed in Orange! So don't forget your orange t-shirt when you join us in the Orange Craze on Queen's Day!!!
Because the Dutch people just like to party, we start celebrating Queen's Day already on the evening of the day before! Usually we start at 7 p.m. and go on until the morning of Queen's Day. This is called Koninginnenacht, Queen's Night. There are a lot of different events, some of the best are outside and completely free for everyone! On Queen's Night you can enjoy many different parties and move all across the city from one party to another. Planning on celebrating Queen's Day in Amsterdam? Be sure you don't miss Queen's Night!
Planning on partying with us? Although we party all night long on Queen's Night, until the early hours of the Queen's Day, you'll need a place to sleep. And one day is way too short for visiting Amsterdam. So, that's why you need a hotel in Amsterdam. How? Where? When? Booking accommondations in Amsterdam for Queen's Day is notoriously difficult. But not with a little help from KoninginnedagAmsterdam.nl! We make it very easy (and cheap) to book a hotel in Amsterdam. Just browse to our Hotel-page and just pick the hotel of your choice!
King's Day: different name and date. Same party!
This year it's not only going to be a special Queen's Day, because of the inauguration, but also because it's the last Queen's Day. At least for the near future. From 2014 Queen's Day is going to be know as King's Day and will be held on the birthday of (future) King Willem-Alexander, April 27th. However, 2014 is immediately an exception. Because April 27th in 2014 is Sunday, King's Day will be held the day before, April 26th. But from 2015 on King's Day will be on April 27.
